Description
The Career and Technology Teacher Education department provides an educational pathway to becoming a New York State certified or licensed teacher for grades K-12.
Career and technology education is a broad educational field that focuses on providing students with the skills, knowledge, and training necessary to pursue careers in specific industries or professions. Teachers specialize in practical, hands-on skills, typically in subjects related to a specific career pathway.
A technology teacher typically focuses on teaching students about various technological concepts and skills, such as computer literacy, digital tools, coding, and possibly even robotics or engineering, depending on the curriculum. Our degree programs provide academic and technical instruction in the content areas of agriculture, business and marketing, family and consumer sciences, health sciences, trade and technical education, and technology education.
A crucial aspect lies in the knowledge and processes required to design, manufacture, and operate these technological products, encompassing engineering expertise, design principles, production techniques, and various technical skills
The BSEd degree is a common qualification for educators in many fields, and it prepares teachers with both educational theory and practical skills to teach effectively. Teachers in these areas strive to ensure all students graduate college- and career-ready, and to provide a high-value strategy to support both students’ post secondary aspirations and the strength of the city’s economy.
Currently there is a shortage of teachers in New York and many opportunities for employment.
Mission
Our mission, as urban educators, is to prepare professionally competent, reflective and caring technical educators for a world of technology and diversity.
Degree Programs
The bachelor of science in education degree in program equips students with the necessary professional knowledge and skills to become career technical education subject teachers. Graduates can obtain initial and professional New York State teaching certifications and teach in middle or high schools, Boards of Cooperative Education Services (BOCES), correctional institutions, private trade schools, and various training positions in the industry.
The bachelor of science in education degree in program is designed for pre-service teachers to develop the knowledge, skills and dispositions required to teach technology education in kindergarten through 12th grade. Technology education is a comprehensive hands-on program designed to enable students in kindergarten through 12th grade to develop technological literacy.
BSEd graduates can obtain an initial New York State Technology Education teaching certificate and teach technology in K-12.
The initial certificate in program is a 74-credit program that enables graduates to apply and be recommended for the New York State Initial Certificate through the approved program pathway before completing the BSEd in Career and Technology Teacher Education.
The professional certificate in program is the advanced-level certificate, required after 5 years at the initial level. It consists of 31 credits and enables completers to apply and be recommended for the New York State Professional Certificate through the approved program pathway before completing the BSEd in Career and Technical Teacher Education.
All of the courses in the certificate programs leading to initial or professional certification will be accepted and applied to the bachelor of science in education in Career and Technical Teacher Education.
The Transitional C Certificate is a 29-credit certificate structured for people who desire a change in their career. It’s a way to address teacher shortages while still ensuring that candidates meet necessary qualifications to eventually hold a permanent, full certification in teaching. City Tech is the sole provider of the Transitional C program in Technology Education within New York State.
Special Opportunities
In collaboration with numerous agencies and programs, we endeavor to offer students access to a diverse range of scholarships.
Success via Apprenticeship: The Success Via Apprenticeship (SVA) Program was established in 1984 as a collaborative project of the New York City Department of Education, the United Federation of Teachers (UFT), and the City University of New York (CUNY). The program is designed to prepare highly motivated graduates of CTE high schools to become CTE teachers over a five-year period. The program has three major components: three years of industry work experience, two years of classroom teacher training, which combine to provide teacher candidates with 5 years of post-secondary study through a state-approved teacher training program.
Teacher Opportunity Corps (TOC): The purpose of Teacher Opportunity Corps II (TOC II) is to increase the rate of historically underrepresented and economically disadvantaged individuals in teaching careers. TOC II programs incorporate strategies for teacher retention and best practice, such as mentors for new teachers and differentiated instructional techniques. Eligible students will receive up to $3000 tuition support per year and an additional $1500 stipend when they complete a 1-year teacher residency program.
NYC Men Teach: The CUNY NYC Men Teach program provides academic and financial supports to program participants, with the goal of supporting them through the teachers certification and hiring process so they can enter the NYC teaching workforce as effective urban educators.
NYC Men Teach at City Tech is an active program that supports CTTE students who are looking for a teaching career. Program fellows receive free certification exam vouchers, NYS mandatory workshops, and other financial incentives, as well as access to a dedicated program counselor who offer advisement and other academic supports. NYC Men Teach program fellows also convene for a semester-long seminar focused on culturally-responsive education.
Noyce Scholarship: The overarching goal of the Noyce program is to increase the number of highly qualified STEM teachers in high need school districts in Brooklyn and the New York metropolitan area. Students at City Tech and BMCC participate in teaching internships at local middle schools and high schools in NYC and/or with Professors.
Scholarships are also available and students participate in a STEM summer program. For additional information, please contact Professor Fangyang Shen, Computer Systems, at fangyang.shen92citytech.cuny.edu.
