City Tech’s Initial Certificate in Career and Technical Teacher Education program is meticulously designed meet the requirements for obtaining New York State's initial teaching certificate. This program offers a pathway for individuals with professional knowledge and relevant work experience in the field of career and technical education. These areas include aviation, electrical/electronics, computer technology, graphic arts, construction, restorative dentistry, vision care, and culinary arts.

Upon completing the 74-credit certificate program, completers can apply for an initial career and technical education teaching certificate, which is valid for five years. Subsequently, they can pursue the professional certificate in Career and Technical Teacher Education and/or the bachelor of science in education in Career and Technical Teacher education. All credits earned toward both initial and professional certification count toward the baccalaureate degree.

Professional Licensure

Completers of the program can apply for the New York State initial teaching certificate if they meet requirements for NYS mandatory workshops. See the NYSDOE Office of Teaching Initiative website for further information.

Accreditation

Initial Certificate in Career and Technical Teacher Education program is accredited by the Association for Advancing Quality in Educator Preparation (AAQEP).

Advisement Information

Students who have questions or need guidance about the program can request a meeting with the department. To seek advice, students can either fill out a pre-advisement form or visit the department office in Pearl 510 between 8:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m., Monday through Thursday.

Department faculty offer advisement hours during the week, and students can request a meeting directly through the advisement booking link.
