City Tech’s Human Services program is uniquely designed to blend theory and practical training, preparing students for impactful, rewarding careers dedicated to helping others. Graduates of the HUS program pursue careers in diverse fields, including:

  • Mental Health and Counseling

  • Aging Services and Gerontology

  • Child and Family Welfare

  • Public Health and Community Health Education

  • Substance Abuse and Rehabilitation Services

  • Criminal Justice and Probation

  • Victim Advocacy and Social Justice

Typical employers include hospitals, behavioral health agencies, community centers, nonprofit organizations, schools, senior centers, shelters, and government agencies.

Many graduates continue their education, pursuing advanced degrees in Social Work, Mental Health Counseling, Public Health, or related fields.

Students gain comprehensive knowledge and skills such as:

  • Counseling techniques and effective communication

  • Case management and service coordination

  • Advocacy and community resource navigation

  • Group facilitation and leadership skills

  • Cultural competence and ethical practice

  • Crisis intervention and conflict resolution

  • Program development and evaluation (advanced level)

The curriculum is paced to support steady progression, beginning with foundational skills in the introductory courses and advancing to specialized and leadership-oriented coursework in the upper-level curriculum.

Learning Outcomes

A mission of the Health and Human Services Department is to assist associate and bachelor students in acquiring a human service practice foundation. Graduates of our Human Service programs will be able to demonstrate the following:

  • Understanding of the historical development of human services including its impact. Students will be able to analyze and interpret historical data for applications in advocacy and social change.

  • Knowledge and application of the theories of the interaction of individual, interpersonal, group, family, organizational, community, and societal systems.

  • Ability to analyze and apply theories, knowledge and skills to the scope of conditions that promote or inhibit human functioning to the range of populations served and needs addressed by human services.

  • Knowledge and skills in systematic analysis of services and needs; selection of appropriate strategies, services, or interventions; and evaluation of outcomes.

  • Knowledge and skills development in information management. Students will be able to analyze and apply information in the service of clients or client groups through development, design, implementation and evaluation of plans of action.

  • Knowledge and skills in direct service delivery and appropriate interventions. Students will be able to demonstrate analysis and application of theory and knowledge bases.

  • Interpersonal skills development such as conflict resolution, establishing rapport with clients, and ethical and professional behavior.

  • Administrative skills necessary for services delivery such as strategic planning and evaluation, leadership, supervision, budgeting and monitoring, grant and contract negotiations, and compliance with regulatory issues.

  • Demonstrate human services values and attitudes and understanding of human services ethics and their application in practice.

  • Awareness of their own values, personalities, reaction patterns, interpersonal styles, and limitations.

Accreditation

The associate in applied science in Human Services HUS is accredited by the Council for Standards in Human Services Education.

Distance Learning

Currently, the Human Services (HUS) program at City Tech is not registered with the state as a fully online or distance learning degree program. However, City Tech offers selected Human Services courses in online, or hybrid formats to provide greater flexibility and accessibility for students.

  •  Online Courses: Entirely remote, with coursework completed through City Tech’s online learning platform.

  • Hybrid Courses: Combination of asynchronous online learning and limited in-person class meetings.

Recommendations for Students

  • Students must ensure they have reliable access to technology, internet connectivity, and necessary software to successfully participate in distance learning courses.

  • For additional support and resources, students are encouraged to connect with City Tech’s e-learning support services.

While not a fully online program, the flexible course delivery options offered by the Human Services program help accommodate diverse scheduling needs and support students' academic success.

Additional Costs

City Tech’s Human Services program may have some additional costs beyond standard tuition and fees. These commonly include:

  • Background Checks and Fingerprinting: Necessary for internships at specific agencies, usually involving a separate fee.

  • Health Clearances and Immunizations: Some placement agencies require updated immunizations or medical exams.

  • Transportation Expenses: Students are responsible for travel to and from internship sites.

  • Textbooks and Course Materials: Regular expenses associated with required coursework.

Schedule Availability

  • Human Services courses are offered during the day, evening, weekends, and online/hybrid formats to accommodate diverse student needs.

  • Internships typically occur during regular business hours (Monday-Friday, daytime hours). Students must plan schedules accordingly; however, some internships offer evening or weekend hours.

Course Requirements and Licensure

  • Students should be aware that some courses required for the degree do not directly lead to professional licensure.

  • Those seeking licensure in fields such as social work or mental health counseling must plan for additional graduate-level coursework.

Organizing Coursework

  • Students considering transferring credits to related degrees within City Tech or pursuing professional certification/licensure should consult faculty advisor early in their program to strategically plan coursework.

  • Students interested in academic minors (if applicable in the future) or additional certifications should discuss these interests with a faculty advisor to ensure compatibility with their current academic plan.
