AAS - Associate in Applied Science

An associate degree in Accounting is a two-year program. This degree provides foundational knowledge in accounting principles, practices, and software. It's designed for students who want to pursue careers in accounting or related fields but don't want to commit to a full four-year degree initially. The curriculum includes both theoretical coursework and practical skills.

In the accounting associate degree, the following key topics are taught:

  • Financial Accounting: Understanding how to prepare financial statements like balance sheets, income statements, and cash flow statements.

  • Managerial Accounting: Using accounting data for internal decision-making, budgeting, and cost management.

  • Taxation: Basics of individual and corporate taxation, including how to prepare tax returns and understand tax laws.

  • Accounting Software: Familiarity with accounting software like QuickBooks, Excel, and other tools commonly used in the field.

  • Business Math: The application of mathematical principles to solve accounting problems.

  • Auditing: Basics of auditing processes and how to examine financial statements to ensure accuracy and compliance with regulations.

The Accounting program equips students with accounting skills that will make them immediately employable upon graduation with the associate degree.

Accounting graduates are employed in all facets of industry:

  1. Bookkeeper

  2. Accounting Assistant

  3. Tax Preparer

  4. Payroll Clerk

  5. Accounts Payable/Receivable Clerk

City Tech graduates are employed in non profits and corporate organizations such as hospitals, service organizations, and governmental agencies. Some of these employers include Long Island College Hospital, the Brooklyn Hospital, Brookdale Hospital, Downstate Medical Center, NYU Medical Center, the New York City Department of Finance, the Internal Revenue Service, H & R Block, the New York State Department of Taxation and Finance, the New York City Department of Housing, Astoria Federal Savings Bank, TD Bank, JPMorgan Chase, HSBC Bank, Wachovia Bank, Ernst & Young, Con Edison, and National Grid.

Many students who complete this degree continue on to earn a bachelor's degree in Accounting or Finance. This can open up opportunities for more advanced positions, like Certified Public Accountant (CPA) or financial analyst.

Learning Outcomes

The Accounting program at City Tech will help students:

  • To acquire effective business communication skills, via group reports.

  • To understand the components of financial statements.

  • To be proficient in the use of computer spreadsheets and integrated accounting systems.

  • To understand how management uses information from the accounting system to operate business enterprises.

  • To acquire knowledge of the accounting cycle.

Progression and Graduation Requirements

As listed in the course description of ACC 1101, a grade of C or higher is required to progress into subsequent accounting courses.

Articulation Agreements

Graduates are able to transfer to the accounting program at St. Francis through an existing articulation agreement. Please refer to the college website to see the full text of the agreement. Students should consult City Tech’s Career and Transfer Office, the Namm Building, room N105 for additional information

Distance Learning Information

The AAS in Accounting has been approved by NYSED and MSCHE to be offered as a fully online program.

This degree program does not accept international students needing an F-1 visa, because we cannot guarantee that students will be able satisfy the Department of Homeland Security requirement that students maintain their full-time status and do not take more than 3 credits online each semester (dhs.gov). A significant component of this program is offered online.

 Note: Intermediate Accounting I and II (ACC 2301 and ACC 2401) are required courses for the AAS in Accounting. However, these courses will not meet financial accounting and reporting requirements for the 150 semester hour education requirement for CPA licensure in New York State.
