Description

Mechanical Engineering Technology is a field of study and practice that focuses on the application of engineering principles and technological advancements to design, develop, and maintain mechanical systems and devices. It's all about turning engineering theory into practical, real-world applications. Our professionals play a crucial role in industries such as automotive, aerospace, energy, manufacturing, and many others, contributing to innovation and technological advancements.

The department utilizes a variety of state-of-the-art engineering software packages in its core curricula:

  • We use Autodesk AutoCAD, Inventor, SolidWorks, and Solid Edge in our CAD programs.

  • We use MasterCAM, Matlab, and LabVIEW in our CAM and CAE programs.

  • We use robot simulation and offline programming (OLP) software from RoboDK for industrial robots in our courses in industrial design, manufacturing, and robotic concentrations.

  • We use Elite HVAC software and 3D printing slicer software in our thermodynamics and rapid prototyping program, respectively.

Mission

The mission of the Department of Mechanical Engineering Technology at New York City College of Technology is to educate students for careers in the fields of mechanical/manufacturing engineering technology and industrial/product design. We balance practical knowledge with theory, emphasizing hands-on applications of the latest technology. The department provides education to both traditional and non-traditional students of diverse backgrounds for successful entry into the industry. Through excellence in teaching and community service, the department promotes opportunities for scholarly, personal, and professional growth. Graduates will be prepared to support the diverse needs of industry in the metropolitan New York area. Our focus is on the following areas: manufacturing engineering, materials testing, industrial design, quality assurance, power engineering, building MEP engineering, robotics and automation. We provide the fundamental concepts and technical skills required for students to create a wide range of career paths in the manufacturing and mechanical engineering technology profession.

The Department of Mechanical Engineering Technology provides a well-rounded, career-oriented education using cutting-edge technology in order to prepare students for immediate employment. The department offers three programs designed for people who like to learn through the experience of doing. Most of our classes include laboratories where experiments are performed. The latest computer innovations in mechanical engineering and computer-aided design are presented in the program.

Degrees

The Mechanical Engineering Technology program provides the fundamental knowledge and skills necessary for success in a broad range of technical careers. A balanced curriculum provides a solid foundation in the scientific and mathematical principles on which mechanical design is based, as well as ample hands-on experience in our well-equipped laboratories. Since no design can succeed in today’s competitive environment unless it can be manufactured economically, studies in machine design, advanced solids modeling, applied mechanics, production methods and CNC/rapid prototyping (CAD/CAM) are integrated into the program. To prepare students for the rapid pace of technological change in the workplace, the program seeks to develop the kinds of creative design and problem-solving capabilities which never become obsolete.

The associate in science degree in Mechanical Engineering Technology covers fundamental knowledge in various branches of mechanical engineering. AAS students can move seamlessly into the bachelor of technology degree.

The bachelor of technology in Mechanical Engineering Technology provides advanced knowledge with leading-edge technology to perform solid modeling, engineering analysis, and industrial design evaluation. But the program offers more than theory alone; it emphasizes a hands-on approach and is centered on practical industrial applications. Students are introduced cutting edge CNC equipment, Lathe/milling equipment, HVAC Trainer, 3D printers and Robotics equipment to sharpen hands-on performance.

The associate in applied science in Industrial Design Technology program is designed to provide students with a wide variety of valuable skills enabling them to utilize 2D, 3D, and animation/simulation software packages in several diverse fields. Job titles for graduates of this program include design manager, animation developer, industrial design systems manager, industrial designer, industrial product designer, project manager, CAD/CAM programmer, and mechanical designer.

Special Opportunities

Many students actively participate in student clubs and engage in ASME (American Society of Mechanical Engineers) activities. ASME offers a variety of opportunities, including internships, scholarships, and workshops aimed at job placement.
