Description

Environmental control technology is the study of the science, equipment, and systems that are essential to creating and maintaining a comfortable indoor environment. Sophisticated air conditioning, heating, and refrigeration systems are required to maintain the healthful indoor air quality that enables us to live and work in an urban setting, while conserving and utilizing energy resources wisely. 

Our students learn the theory as well as getting hands on experience that provides a solid foundation in the design, installation and repair of Heating, Ventilating, and Air Conditioning (HVAC) equipment such as boilers, AC units, fans, pumps, piping, and ductwork.

The faculty and staff of the Environmental Control Technology Department are dedicated to preparing our graduates for substantial and meaningful careers in all aspects of the facilities management and heating and air conditioning industries. The staff are committed to being at the leading edge of the discipline and to providing a first-class learning and teaching experience for all students.

The department provides a learning atmosphere conducive to the needs of the curricula. There are classrooms, laboratories with state-of-the-art equipment, and a computer lab that together allow students to make the important connections between theory, design, and practice.

Our faculty members are active in the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-conditioning Engineers (ASH RAE), on both the local and international level.

Mission

The mission of the Environmental Control Technology Department is to prepare our students for careers in the fields of HVAC technology and Facilities Management. Our Department’s emphasis on applied skills and theory-based learning built upon a vibrant general education foundation equips students with both problem-solving skills and an understanding of the social contexts of technology that make its graduates competitive. We value and will continue our long tradition of educating non-traditional students of diverse backgrounds for successful entry into the workforce

Degree Programs

The associate in applied science degree in program is a two-year program consisting of lecture and lab courses that prepare students for careers in the HVAC industry. Typical positions in this field include technicians, installers, estimators, equipment sales engineers, and designers. 

The bachelor of technology degree in program prepares graduates for careers as facility managers in large commercial buildings, hotels, hospitals, residential complexes, universities, and other institutions. Facility managers operate a building’s mechanical systems, oversee space planning and scheduling, and supervise  maintenance and custodial workers.

The Facilities Management Degree is a 4 year degree and can be obtained as a continuation of two-year associates degrees in Architecture, Civil Engineering Tech, Construction Management Tech, or Environmental Control Tech OR students can enroll directly into the four-year program without the AAS degree.

Students with no work experience are encouraged to pursue internship opportunities for credit.
