The Department of Architecture offers a rigorous education at the most competitive tuition in the metropolitan area. The department is known for its workplace-oriented curriculum and advanced digital technologies providing opportunities for students to engage in real world community-oriented design projects. Our location in Downtown Brooklyn allows the department to use New York City and its environs as a laboratory for learning and as an extension of the classroom.

Our full-time professors are practicing, licensed professionals, and our part-time instructional pool of over seventy adjuncts hold prominent positions in city agencies, at prestigious public or not-for-profit institutions or with the region's leading private architecture, design, and engineering firms. Our faculty are recognized regionally and nationally for their important contributions to the profession. The department has been awarded significant grants that have provided new resources and research opportunities for our faculty and students.

The student experience is enriched through participation in programs such as Emerging Scholars which provides opportunities to conduct advanced study and research alongside faculty mentors. Faculty and students have presented research at professional conferences such as the ACSA (Association of Collegiate Schools of Architecture), SARA (Society of American Registered Architects), and the AIA (American Institute of Architects).

New York City College of Technology's Department of Architecture is committed to strengthening its partnerships with industry professionals. Our curriculum is focused on key areas of industry need, as identified by our faculty and advisory board, including Building Information Modeling (BIM); Sustainable Technologies, Advanced Computation and Fabrication; Preservation & Restoration; Zoning Regulations, Building Code and Approvals; Acoustics and Lighting; and Advanced Construction Detailing. Faculty with expertise in these fields lead these courses. Our department’s central location and over fifty years of faculty-cultivated relationships with employers, graduates, and allied professionals allows us to identify employment and other unique learning opportunities for our students.

Mission

The Department of Architecture offers an innovative, progressive, nurturing, and inclusive environment that prepares students for advanced education and careers in architecture and related fields. The department aims to produce graduates who are recognized leaders in the architecture industry and beyond. Our faculty are committed to delivering an education that encompasses design, building technology, history, theory, and environmental studies. This is achieved through creative and scholarly research, the use of cutting-edge computational tools, interdepartmental collaboration, and community-based learning initiatives.

Degree Programs

The associate in applied science in program, the only program of its kind in the CUNY system, educates students to assist the architect and perform at a high level in design, contract documents and the construction stages of a building project.

The bachelor of technology in program is a unique four-year degree that prepares the student to be proficient in the 21st century technologies required to manage all phases of professional practice in architecture and related fields.

The program is a 160-credit, professional, 5-year degree (B.Arch). The B.Arch curriculum is designed to meet the National Architectural Accrediting Board (NAAB) accreditation standards.

Special Programs and Opportunities

The Selldorf Architects Scholarship: Recipients of this scholarship must be matriculated students in either the third or fourth year of the BTech degree program; or, the third, fourth or fifth year of the B. Arch degree program.

The Student Laptop Grant Program Sponsored by The Brooklyn Studio: The Department of Architectural Technology Student Laptop Grants Program provides assistance to students by reimbursing them for a portion of the purchase of a laptop. A limited number of grants will be awarded to full-time Arch Tech students with demonstrated financial need.

The Brooklyn Architects Scholarship Foundation: The Brooklyn Architects Scholarship Foundation is a non-profit 501(c) 3 organization that was established by Brooklyn architects who wanted to award scholarships to deserving architectural students attending an accredited architecture program in New York City.  

Accreditation

The New York City College of Technology, Department of Architectural Technology has a three-year term of Accreditation for the following NAAB accredited degree program: B. Arch. (160 undergraduate credits); next visit for continuation of candidacy: 2025
