Degree Designation

BTECH - Bachelor of Technology

The bachelor of technology in Emerging Media Technology is a four-year undergraduate program within the department of Entertainment Technology focused on creating the next generation of creative technologists for the expanding emerging media industries of New York City and beyond. Students develop solid skills within the framework of an integrated technical production-based curriculum. This uniquely qualifies them to work within the agile interdisciplinary environment that defines today's media industry.

The program is one-of-a-kind in its approach, combining a foundation in computer programming with design theory and hands-on project development. All students learn the basics in a variety of interrelated areas, including static and time-based media design, software development, physical computing, fabrication, computer music, and game development. Advancing students benefit from a flexible program of study, with the ability to concentrate in one or more focus areas or to mix and match courses for a more generalist approach. Primary focus areas include computer music, game development, and experiential media. The experiential media area encompasses multi-modal and often immersive media experiences. Secondary focuses are available in a variety of other areas, including visual art, audio/visual production, electronics, fabrication, and computation. Students taking courses from the computation category have the option of completing an academic minor in computer science.

Through multiple collaborative project development labs and a year-long culmination project, students gain experience with rapid prototyping, project management, and teamwork. As they accumulate finished projects, students are guided in cultivating individual portfolios of work suitable for use in applying for employment or graduate school in their area(s) of focus.

The coursework in the Emerging Media Technology program is a mix of in-person, hybrid, and online courses.
