Degree Designation
The Bachelor of Science degree in Applied Mathematics is a practical degree for those seeking employment upon graduation or a graduate degree. Our program consists of a mathematics core, a general education core, free electives, and two semesters of internships. You must be eligible to take Calculus I MAT 1475 (or higher) to be admitted to our four-year Bachelor of Science degree program.
We live in an information age, and data is a resource. Our majors develop tools to convert unprocessed data into valuable information. Jobs such as data analysis, data engineering, and data visualization all rely on processing information.
You may customize this major to reach your career goals with free electives. For examples of semester-by-semester plans, please see the different degree maps. If mathematics courses are used to satisfy General Education, then you will have more than the minimum of 17 credits of free electives. These electives are for you to develop and explore areas of interest.
The value of mathematics is widely recognized, and our graduates are ready for many interesting career paths. Our alumni accomplishments are impressive. Please see http://www.citytech.cuny.edu/mathematics/student-success.aspx.
Learning Outcomes
Communication: Communication skills include the ability to write and speak clearly, and actively read and listen. Applied math majors can present information and respond to questions clearly and persuasively, using language appropriate for the target audience.
Collaboration: Applied math majors can work well with others. They learn about different roles in organizations, and where to turn for help. They understand their responsibilities, and develop leadership skills.
Creativity: Mathematics models are representations. Applied Math majors can make connections, select and refine mathematical models. They can balance the need for accuracy and for quick approximations. Applied Math majors create useful models of real-world problems.
Critical Thinking: Applied Math majors can solve problems using mathematical analysis and computational tools. They analyze and critique models and data, identify arguments and assumptions and evaluate supporting evidence.
Admission Requirements
Students applying for admission must meet the college standards for admission into a baccalaureate program and must be eligible to enroll in MAT 1475. Prospective transfer students should consult with the Mathematics Department at the earliest possible point to be certain that they gain maximum transfer credit and that they enter the program with the requisite background. Current City Tech students seeking to enter the program must secure the approval of the Mathematics Department to file a change of curriculum request with the Office of the Registrar.
Students should be aware that the program requires a high level of math proficiency and that those unprepared for the rigorous coursework may be obliged to complete prerequisites before beginning their upper-level coursework in applied mathematics. This may add to the credits required for graduation.
